Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common problem that is caused by compression of median nerve in the wrist causing pain, numbness, and weakness in the hands. At times, the only symptom could be objects falling out of the hands. It is more common in women than men. It is also more common in obese women and least common in thin men.
Points to remember here are:
- Wrist splints usually are only needed at night. You can wear them during the day if pain is severe.
- Steroid injection is also an option in many cases.
- There are studies that shows that sonographically guided percutaneous needle release of the carpal tunnel that may do as good as surgery but you need to find an orthopedic surgeon that can do that. Here is a video of this procedure.
- There is no definitive evidence that repetitive activity and or work activity results in development of carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Surgery can also be done by endoscopy avoiding the usual incision and healing.
