Gastroenterology Curriculum – Students will have to learn and be tested on the following information laid out in the curriculum*. All information can be accessed in the resources and lecture videos listed below the curriculum.
Specific Goals:
- To gain knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of disorders of the gastroenterologic system.
- Develop the clinical skills of data collection including history taking, physical examination, and the appropriate request of laboratory and imaging studies.
- The performance and/or interpretation of diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures common in the practice of Gastroenterology.
- Review the typical radiographic, endoscopic, and laboratory features of common gastroenterologic diseases.
- Recognize the need for appropriate Gastroenterology consultation.
Educational Objectives:
1. Know the clinical manifestations, presentations, pathophysiology, and management of common gastroenterologic ailments, including:
- GI Bleeding
i. Peptic and Duodenal Ulcer Diseaseii. NSAID-induced Gastritis iii. Diverticular Disease - Hepatitis and Hepatic Insufficiency i. Viral Hepatitisii. Alcohol induced liver disease iii. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis iv. Hemochromatosis
- Alimentary Disorders
i. Functional Diarrheaii. Inflammatory Bowel Disease iii. Colorectal cancer screening
iv. Chronic functional constipationv. Irritable Bowel Disorder - Biliary Diseasei. Cholecystitis, cholangitis, choledocholithiasis ii. Primary Biliary Cirrhosisiii. Sclerosing Cholangitis

- Develop Clinical and Technical Skills
a. Abdominal history and exam, including a relevant review of systems b. Paracentesis and interpretation of results - Interpret the results of specific gastroenterologic laboratory tests
- Recognize the radiographic and endoscopic manifestatons of commongastroenterologic diseases.
Curriculum:
The resident is provided with
1. A syllabus containing handouts for didactic lectures 2. Daily noon conferences in Internal Medicine topics 3. Weekly Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
Clinical Experiences:
This is an outpatient clinical experience. Residents continue to attend their weekly general medicine continuity clinics and required conferences.
