Gastroenterology Curriculum – Students will have to learn and be tested on the following information laid out in the curriculum*. All information can be accessed in the resources and lecture videos listed below the curriculum. 

Specific Goals:

  1. To gain knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of disorders of the gastroenterologic system.
  2. Develop the clinical skills of data collection including history taking, physical examination, and the appropriate request of laboratory and imaging studies.
  3. The performance and/or interpretation of diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures common in the practice of Gastroenterology.
  4. Review the typical radiographic, endoscopic, and laboratory features of common gastroenterologic diseases.
  5. Recognize the need for appropriate Gastroenterology consultation.

Educational Objectives:

1. Know the clinical manifestations, presentations, pathophysiology, and management of common gastroenterologic ailments, including:

  1. GI Bleeding
    i. Peptic and Duodenal Ulcer Diseaseii. NSAID-induced Gastritis iii. Diverticular Disease
  2. Hepatitis and Hepatic Insufficiency i. Viral Hepatitisii. Alcohol induced liver disease iii. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis iv. Hemochromatosis
  3. Alimentary Disorders
    i. Functional Diarrheaii. Inflammatory Bowel Disease iii. Colorectal cancer screening
    iv. Chronic functional constipationv. Irritable Bowel Disorder
  4. Biliary Diseasei. Cholecystitis, cholangitis, choledocholithiasis ii. Primary Biliary Cirrhosisiii. Sclerosing Cholangitis
  5. Pancreatitisi. Acute, Chronic and necrotizing ii. In association with cholecystitisiii. Drug-Induced
  1. Develop Clinical and Technical Skills
    a. Abdominal history and exam, including a relevant review of systems b. Paracentesis and interpretation of results
  2. Interpret the results of specific gastroenterologic laboratory tests
  3. Recognize the radiographic and endoscopic manifestatons of commongastroenterologic diseases.

Curriculum:

The resident is provided with
1. A syllabus containing handouts for didactic lectures 2. Daily noon conferences in Internal Medicine topics 3. Weekly Internal Medicine Grand Rounds

Clinical Experiences:

This is an outpatient clinical experience. Residents continue to attend their weekly general medicine continuity clinics and required conferences.
