Lesson 1. Medical Ethics
Medical Ethics is chosen to be the first lesson as it should be. Medical Ethics is needed now more than ever before in view of the rapid changes in healthcare that are forcing more and more doctors to become employees.
Becoming an employee, physicians will lose their independence. Like their counterparts in pharmacies, they soon will become familiar with the words such as productions, quotas, rapid refills, and soon they have to stick their head out of a window to provide drive-thru service for those who only want a quick visit.
Physicians may also be coerced to put the interest of their employers ahead of their patients. Examples of these are happening already with early discharges, ignoring other medical problems during the hospital stay because of bundling of the hospital fees, and telling patients to go out of the hospital and come back in for a separate admission.
